Placement of Data in Multi-Zone Disk Drives

چکیده
This paper describes a placement technique for the layout of les across the surface of a multi zone magnetic disk drive to maximize its bandwidth It argues for a le system that monitors the frequency of access to the les and modi es the placement of les in order to respond to an evolving pattern of le accesses Such a le system is particularly useful for repositories whose primary functionality is to disseminate information such as the World Wide Web along with thousands of ftp sites that render documents graphic pictures images audio clips and full motion video available on the Internet Employing software techniques to enhance the disk performance is important because its mechanical nature has limited its hardware performance improvements at to percent a year

Optimal Data Placement on Disks: A Comprehensive Solution for Different Technologies
The problem of optimally placing data on disks (ODP) to maximize disk-access performance, has long been recognized as important. Solutions to this problem have been reported for some widely available disk technologies, such as magnetic optical CAV and CLV disks. However, important new technologies, such as multi-zone magnetic disks have been recently introduced. For such technologies no formal ...
متن کاملPlacement of Multi-rate Smoothed VBR Video Objects to MZR Disks
MZR(Multi-Zone Recording) disks are widely used for their high overall bandwidth and capacity nowadays. Since MZR disks show different bandwidths and capacities depending on the zone, data placement schemes for traditional CAD(Constant Angular Density) disks are not suitable for MZR disks. Especially, since the performance of continuous media servers strongly depend on the block placement schem...
متن کاملStoring Trees on Disk Drives
Tree-structured data are abundant today, ranging from Bioinformatics suffix-tree alignments, to multi-resolution video, to directory-file hierarchies, to XML. The storage techniques employed by systems that manage tree-structured data greatly affect their performance. Current approaches either map the tree data to an underlying relational database system, or use the abstraction provided by a ge...
متن کاملStudy on Disk Zoning for Video Servers
Without proper care of the disk zoning issue, we may suffer a great loss in both storage and bandwidth utilization for supplying video streams. In this regard, we propose two schemes, free-π and fixed-π schemes, in a unified framework of rearranging the zone layout in a logical manner. The free-π scheme can optimally utilize resources, but needs a complicated timing control. Whereas, the fixed-...
متن کاملTrack-Pairing: A Novel Data Layout for VOD Servers with Multi-Zone-Recording Disks
Multi-zone recording increases disk capacity b y approximating fixed linear recording density. With $xed rotation speed, however, transfer rate varies with track location, as does the number of video streams that can be played concurrently. This paper proposes TrackPairing, a deterministic scheme for static intra-disk data layout. By recording each movie alternately on “outer” tracks and their ...
